AT A GLANCE

OUR PURPOSE

Design has the power to change lives. Design for Impact brings Austin’s design community together to create a kitchen concept that combines beauty, functionality, and purpose, while making a meaningful difference in the everyday life of an injured veteran.

THE CHALLENGE

Design for Impact invites architects, interior designers, kitchen & bath designers, students, and design teams to use their creativity for a greater purpose.

This year, participants will design a kitchen concept for U.S. Army Staff Sergeant (Ret.) Carlos Tosado, an injured veteran living with lasting mobility limitations. The winning concept will help inspire his future kitchen renovation, showing how thoughtful design can promote comfort, independence, and dignity.

WHY ENTER

PURPOSE

Your concept directly shapes a real veteran's kitchen renovation.

EXPOSURE

Winning and featured work will be professionally photographed and promoted across media channels and ASID Texas.

RECOGNITION

Juried awards and prizes, plus Veteran's Choice and People's Choice Award, celebrated on November 4.

COMMUNITY

Connect with Austin's leading designers, makers, and industry vendors and partners.

MEET THE VETERAN

Carlos proudly served in the United States Army, reaching the rank of Staff Sergeant (SSG). During his military career, he served overseas in both Iraq (2011) and Afghanistan (2014).

His years of military service came with significant personal sacrifice. As a result of his service, Carlos has faced multiple health conditions that have created limitations and challenges in his daily life. Despite those challenges, he continues to move forward with determination and purpose.

His Army experience helped shape the leadership, discipline, resilience, accountability, and team-first mentality that he now brings to basketball, coaching, and the development of young people.

Carlos retired from the U.S. Army in September 2015, carrying the lessons, sacrifices, and values of his military service into the next chapter of his life..
